Promoting what IT delivers within any organisation is an important job. Recently a fellow Senior IT Manager from the North West went to great lengths to identify that in their organisation IT were the business, i.e. that there was no us and them stand off between those in IT roles and everyone else. Unfortunately in seemingly every other organisation there is a degree of separation and this is generally hard to overcome. A good comms plan can help a great deal.

As such I think that it’s great news that IT Services within The University of Manchester has now launched IT news – a news bulletin aimed at University staff. The first edition was launched on Monday 5 November 2012 by the Communications and Marketing team. Each newsletter will highlight and communicate successes, projects, developments and accomplishments, with a plan for two issues each year.

Both staff and students from across the University have been involved, and the intention has been to provide a balance of articles that will be of interest to all staff at the University. Topics in the first issue include IT Services’ contribution to the start of year processes, the THE award-nominated podcasting pilots and an introduction to some of the services specifically for researchers at the University.

It’s designed to demonstrate how our operational activities (underpinned by the IT Strategic Plan) are working towards enhancing the student experience, improving the work and research of staff and supporting the University’s Strategic plan. It’s perhaps not of much relevance to external audiences other than to see how one of the top UK universities partly handles the business of corporate IT communications, but it can be viewed by outside of the Uni.
